GRAMOPHONE SPRING ADVICE
Gramophone springs are supplied coiled and should be treated with caution if you are not used to handling these items. If you are not certain you can safely replace a spring yourself we can fit the spring for you. See our spring fitting service for details.
HMV 101 portable gramophones and 103 and 104 table models can have two different motors , they can take either the 3529 spring or the 12047B spring which is similar to 3529 but shorter , The 12047B spring fits a spring barrel approx 72mm diameter which is closed by the bottom gear and four screws , the 3529 fits a spring barrel which is approximately 84mm diameter , and is closed with a plate on top and wire clip . Both springs are normally available for sale in our Ebay Shop .
All our springs are Newly Made , we do not supply old springs except under exceptional circumstances ie if the spring is unusual and would be expensive to manufacure , it is not advisable to use old springs particularly if they have any rust on them as this will laed to a greatly shortened life
Please check before you buy a spring that it is the correct one for your motor, if in doubt email us for advice at jmw.bedford@ntlworld.com .
It should be noted that many motors may have been modified during their life and the spring connections may have been altered. This is particularly true of reproduction and original gramophones coming fom India.

GRAMOPHONE NEEDLES
Gramophone needles we supply are made in the UK from high quality steel, they are one play needles, that is they should be used once only, this has always been so ever since steel needles have been manufactured. Persistent reuse will result in severe damage to the record and render it unplayable.
The needles are available in four tones LOUD, MEDIUM, SOFT and EXTRA SOFT TONE basically the thicker the needle the louder the sound it produces.
For playing 1950's records which are very loud we recommend EXTRA SOFT , For pre 1950 records MEDIUM or SOFT , Acoustic pre 1915 records MEDIUM , very quiet records such as spoken word and some early acoustic records LOUD .
If you play records outside you also need louder needles than when playing indoors
Occasionaly a soundbox will have a needle hole which is too small to take Loud tone needles or the needles screw is too short to tighten up on an Extra Soft tone needle , if you find this is happening return the needles for a full refund or free replacement of another tone.

78RPM RECORDS
78rpm Records sold in our ebay shop are visually inspected and this is described in the item description , all of our items for sale on ebay can be returned for a full refund including return postage if you are not happy with the item or our description
Always use a new needle when playing a record , it prolongs the life of the record , used needles wear the record !!
Shellac 78rpm Records need cleaning occasionally , use warm soapy water , don't let the water touch the label as the inks are fugitive , dry quickly with lint free cloth or paper , avoid prolonged water contact.
DO NOT CLEAN FILMOPHONE OR ACETATE RECORDINGS WITH WATER
WARPED RECORDS
I am told that warped 78rpm records can be easily and simply flattened , to do this you need to obtain two pices of flat ( normal window ) glass , 14" square is the best size to enable 12" records to be treated ,and 5mm thick is also a good idea as it is difficult to break , place the record between the glass sheets and then hold a 250 watt light bulb above the glass , the heat from the bulb will rapidly soften the record , as soon as it relaxes remove the bulb ( or you can melt the record !! ) , allow the record to cool before removing the top piece of glass , you then have a flat disc .

GRAMOPHONE ADVICE
Leave the gramophone spring partly wound after playing a record , it's not a good idea to let it wind down fully and never leave it fully wound , both can result in spring damage or breakage

Could you tell me which spring does a blue HMV 101 use? I just busted one after getting controversial advice about the amount of crank turns from previous owner. Thank you.
